ATVs for Kids – How to Make Sure They’re Safe for Kids

ATVs for Kids

As a parent, your child’s safety is one of the most important considerations you have to make when it comes to selecting an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). You won’t find a “yes” or “no” answer to the question “Are ATVs for kids safe?” The only way to make sure these vehicles are indeed safe for your kids is if you take the proper precautions and follow general safety rules for all-terrain driving.

As a parent, remember that ATVs were originally designed with adult drivers in mind. This means that ATVs for kids—while they have been innovated for young drivers—are still based on the original adult designs. If you have a kid who is raring to take an ATV for a spin, have a look these tips on how to make sure your child has a safer ride (yes, that pun is intended!).
ATVs for Kids

  1. Get the ATV that’s right for your child’s size. ATVs for kids come in various sizes, so make sure you get one that is appropriate for your child’s age and size. Make sure that your kid can reach the controls properly, and that he feels comfortable when seated.
  2. Get an appropriate-sized engine. Consider your child’s age when you consider the size of the ATV’s engine. Start with a small 50cc engine if your child is a beginner, and make use of remote control so that you can control the ATV’s speed levels.
  3. Choose the most stable type of ATV. For younger children, a four-wheeled ATV is a good beginner’s model since it is more stable and more comfortable to control than a three-wheeled version. When your child has more control, you can opt to buy him a three-wheel ATV.
  4. Ensure your child has the proper safety equipment. Invest in high-quality material that is child-friendly and provides your child with maximum protection. Train your child always to use a helmet, goggles, and gloves when he is on the ATV. He should also wear the proper footwear and a chest protector.
  5. Supervise your child while he is on the ATV. Never allow your kids to operate an ATV on their own. Since young children are still learning how to develop specific skills, their reflexes are not as quick or refined as those of teenagers or adults. This means they can potentially get into accidents when they lose control of their ATV. Remember: While the simplest of ATVs for kids might seem like toys to children, they are still real vehicles and should be regarded with the same safety precautions.
  6. Supervise the terrain on which your child will take his ATV. Always make sure that your child rides his ATV in safe areas such as paths and grassy trails. Never permit your child to take his ATV to the open road or in public streets.

When it comes to ATVs for kids, you can never be too safe. While all sports put any person at risk for injuries, it is possible for your child to have a fun yet safe ATV experience if you prepare him well.
